2018 Winemaker's Reserve Pinot Noir
Winemaker Andrew Kirkland selects his favorite barrels from our entire cellar and all of our vineyards each year. In 2018 he chose barrels from the Ruby Estate vineyard from the first and last picks of the harvest. The combination of fruit that was picked three weeks apart from Ruby's over 40 year old vines created a dynamic, multilayered and elegant wine.
Tasting notes
The Winemaker’s Reserve is more about lot selection and single barrels within those lots that are reflections of ideas we are pursuing during the growing season, harvest, and in the winemaking process. This may include different winemaking variables such as picking decisions, extraction techniques, barrel choices, or the use of whole cluster. In a sense, the Winemaker’s Reserve is a space to explore winegrowing and winemaking and ultimately reflect upon those explorations by composing a wine that demonstrate those decisions within a specific vintage. Ultimately, the wine needs to reflect its place and not be muddled by the winemaker’s hand. It is the expression of place that we are after. The 2016 Winemaker’s Reserve is comprised of barrels from 3 separate AVA’s Mcminnville, Yamhill-Carlton, and of course the Chehalem Mountains. Some whole cluster and 30% new oak.
